2 Gardens at Raila Secondary School - Pillars of Kibera

Nutrition, Education, & Income Generation

Nairobi, Kenya

DIG started its first school project in October 2009.  The Raila school serves 800 students in the heart of Kibera the largest slum on the African continent.  They basic diet has been composed of collard greens represented by the stalks in the picture to the left.  We have established two gardens at the school which now provides a variety of vegetables to supplement their meals.

The students are also gaining practical experience and knowledge by working in the garden and learning about plants, biology, and sustainable gardening techniques.
