DIG’s first orphanage project is located in Buwala, Uganda about 15 miles from Jinja. A couple named Paul and Rose have four kids of their own and have graciously provided a loving home for 20 additional children that have been orphaned. It all started by accepting one child but they just kept coming. Rose said she just couldn’t turn them away. They have done the best they can in providing a nurturing home. DIG was blown away by Paul and Rose when we first met them. They are by no means rich and are simply trying to make ends meet. They have a several acres of land behind their house which DIG would like to farm. Currently the proceeds of their modest garden go to support the family of 26. DIG knows we can improve this effort and increase their food security. The responsibility that this couple has taken on is beyond anything one can imagine. The commitment and courage they live every day is beyond measure and DIG is motivated to help here.
Our goal is to provide them with a sustainable garden that will reduce household food expenses, increase the nutrition in the families diet, and provide an essential piece of food security, skills, and techniques that will be utilized throughout these childrens’ lives.
